Before you reach for that Coke or Iced Tea, think again. The American Heart Association has published a report on the direct link between sugar-sweetened beverages and Hypertension.
"In the International Study of Macro/Micronutrients and Blood Pressure (INTERMAP), for every extra sugar-sweetened beverage drunk per day participants on average had significantly higher systolic blood pressure by 1.6 millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) and diastolic blood pressure higher by 0.8 mm Hg. This remained statistically significant even after adjusting for differences in body mass, researchers said."
Researchers found higher blood pressure levels in individuals who consumed more glucose and fructose, both sweeteners that are found in high-fructose corn syrup, the most common sugar sweetener used by the beverage industry.
Soda and Other Sweetened Beverages - Drink in Moderation
Higher blood pressure was more pronounced in people who consumed high levels of both sugar and sodium. They found no consistent association between diet soda intake and blood pressure levels. Those who drank diet soda had higher mean BMI than those who did not and lower levels of physical activity.
"This points to another possible intervention to lower blood pressure," said Paul Elliott, Ph.D., senior author and professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the School of Public Health at Imperial College London. "These findings lend support for recommendations to reduce the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages, as well as added sugars and sodium in an effort to reduce blood pressure and improve cardiovascular health."
The researchers found that sugar intake in the form of glucose, fructose and sucrose was highest in those consuming more than one sugar-sweetened beverage daily. They also found that individuals consuming more than one serving per day of sugar-sweetened beverages consumed more calories than those who didn't, with average energy intake of more than 397 calories per day.
Those who did not consume sugar-sweetened beverages had lower average body mass index (BMI) than those who consumed more than one of these drinks daily. "People who drink a lot of sugar-sweetened beverages appear to have less healthy diets," said Ian Brown, Ph.D., research associate at Imperial College London. "They are consuming empty calories without the nutritional benefits of real food. They consume less potassium, magnesium and calcium.
"One possible mechanism for sugar-sweetened beverages and fructose increasing blood pressure levels is a resultant increase in the level of uric acid in the blood that may in turn lower the nitric oxide required to keep the blood vessels dilated. Sugar consumption also has been linked to enhanced sympathetic nervous system activity and sodium retention."
The American Heart Association recommends no more than half of the discretionary calorie allowance from added sugars, which for most American women is no more than 100 calories per day and for most American men no more than 150 calories per day. Discretionary calories are the remaining calories in a person's "energy allowance" after consuming the recommended types and amounts of foods to meet all daily nutrient requirements.

Last Thursday, a family friend told us about her sister's battle against bone cancer. She had previously survived cancer of the breast, but unfortunately, it has now gone to her bones. We assured her of our prayers, but also to look at wheatgrass, at least to help in the detoxification process when she begins her chemotherapy on Monday.
Wheatgrass Shots to Fight Cancer
I'd like to share this excerpt from an article by Ms Patricia Skinner, talking about the different techniques successful doctors use in the fight against the Big C.
My favorite, ofcourse, is Dr. Anne Wigmore, who is an advocate of wheatgrass. Her very life was a testimony to this as she overcame colon cancer herself. Her therapy is still widely used today.
Dr. Anne Wigmore
Read on ....
All the practitioners who have been successful with the treatment of serious disease, particularly cancer, have a reputation for being very tough on their patients, in fact some have been described as Hitler-like in their attitudes. When questioned, many say that unless a cancer patient is prepared to tackle the problem of detoxification seriously and follow the diet without diversification, then there is little hope that they will be able to overcome the disease. Often patients who are in a weakened state of health need the support of a therapist who is prepared to be firm with them.
DR. MAX GERSON (?–1959). Dr. Gerson's therapy probably can be considered the original biological cancer treatment. In his book entitled A Cancer Therapy, Results of Fifty Cases, Gerson documented 50 successfully treated cancer patients. He explained to readers that the cases in his book were the most extensively documented and therefore most suitable for the purposes of demonstrating his cure.
This therapy relies mainly on fresh organic juices, but includes supplements and strict instructions for lifestyle. A vital aspect of his treatment are the coffee enema she devised to achieve thorough detoxification.
DR. LINUS PAULING (1901–1994). Nobel Prize laureate, Dr. Linus Pauling, researched the properties of nutritional supplements in treating disease for many years, and he is generally accepted as the foremost authority on the subject. In 1979, he published a work with co-author Ewan Cameron titled Cancer and Vitamin C. Pauling advocated supplements, in particular megadoses of vitamin C, for the treatment of cancer and other degenerative diseases.
DR. ANN WIGMORE (1909–1993). Wheatgrass juice and sprouts are the basis for Wigmore's regimen, which she originally devised to cure her own chronic diseases including cancer, and has been successfully helping people for decades. The Wigmore diet focuses primarily on live foods. Wigmore felt that raw vegetables held more nutrition than when cooked and were without the chemical additives that processed foods hold. Her therapy is still practiced at the Hippocrates Institute and has been adopted by a number of alternative health care practitioners as the basis for their treatment.
DR. RANDOLPH STONE (1890–1981). Stone developed a system known as Polarity therapy during his career, which spanned 60 years. He felt that health should be measured by an assessment of the human energy field. This is affected by daily life, nutrition, exercise,
touch, sound, etc. Stone recommended a comprehensive regimen consisting of touch therapy (where the practioner's hands are conduits of energy), diet (a vegetarian diet is emphasized because foods collected in a non-violent way hold more energy), and yoga (to tune the patient into his or her own body). This will balance health, and so produce satisfactory energy fields.
DR. MICHIO KUSHI. Microbiotics is the belief that people are influenced by everything around them, including the environment, foods they eat, and even where they live. Promoting a positive lifestyle is also encouraged in order to keep a good outlook and mental attitude. Possibly the most famous teacher of macrobiotics in the United States, Michio Kushi, in collaboration with Alex Jack, wrote The Cancer Prevention Diet in 1993. It is a comprehensive guide to the prevention and treatment of cancer with a macrobiotic diet.

We are looking at expanding our business of distribution of wheatgrass (with roots). If you are the entrepreneurial type, drop me a note via email and I'd be happy to discuss with you. This business easily generates profit of at least 20%. But more than that, you get the chance to help others (including yourself) to be healthy. AND ... all via part-time.
We need you, wherever you are in the Philippines. Most of our distributors are in Metro Manila, but the demand for the product is very, very strong. If you are in the US, we have FDA approval to distribute there as well.
Join us in this unique opportunity to grow, with a minimal investment of as low as 10K pesos!

It is really good that wheatgrass is getting a lot more acceptance here in the Philippines. This is just the beginning, our company is out to release more variations of the product (the only one of its kind with roots) very soon.
Anyway, I still encounter people who need to be convinced on how wheatgrass can help them achieve better health. What better way to explain to them by showing how their blood is "energized" - yes, through a basic blood test called LBA (Live Blood Analysis).
Natural Therapy Pages (http://www.naturaltherapypages.co.nz) defines it in more detail below:
What is Live Blood Analysis?
Live blood analysis, also known as live blood cell analysis, is the observation of live blood cells using a special microscope known as a dark field microscope. It is a diagnostic test, that is, it is used as a means of detecting health conditions. It is valuable as an early detection tool. A drop of blood is taken from the patient’s fingertip, put on to a glass plate, and then viewed using a microscope that projects the images onto a screen. The blood is not dried or stained beforehand, so the blood elements can be seen in their living state. The tester will look at the variations in the size, shape, ratio, and fine structure of the red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and other blood structures. Unlike other medical tests, you remain present during the analysis of your blood.
Information Provided by Live Blood Analysis
Live blood analysis can provide information about different areas of your health, including:
• the immune system and how well it is functioning
• possible vitamin deficiencies
• how much toxicity is in the body
• any pH imbalances
• any mineral imbalances
• fungus and yeasts within the body
• potential areas of concern and/or weakness
• if the diet is too high in fats and acids
• poor nutrition
• oxidative stress and free radical damage
• inflammation in the body
• the health of the liver
Why Use Live Blood Analysis?
Live blood analysis is designed to detect functional imbalances in the body that are known as precursors to disease extremely early, in some cases, before standard blood testing is able to. The practitioner is then able to recommend changes that need to be made by the client, such as nutritionally, allowing the precursors to be reversed before the disease becomes diagnostically apparent.
TO ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO SEE HOW WHEATGRASS ENERGIZES YOUR BLOOD, LET ME KNOW. WE OFFER FREE LBA TESTING IN OUR OFFICE IN MAKATI.

I was reading different articles over the holidays and came upon an intriguing discussion on how to supercharge wheatgrass in the fight against cancer. While experiments have been done in the past on this subject, it is still in research phase. Please read the disclaimer here:
HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!
Anyway, the premise of the experiment is that back in the 1940s, ultra-violet light was used to heal certain diseases including cancer. The blood is extracted from the patient and treated with light. Once the cells are "energized", they are transmitted back to the body. Now as we know wheatgrass shares the same molecular structure as hemoglobin, so instead of treating blood with light, it is being done to wheatgrass. You get the picture ...
Details of the research can be found below, taken from the Independent Cancer Research Foundation website:
